Founding Principal, John Chipman, began creating a new direction for his father’s retail interior design firm in 1979 when he joined the small Chicago design practice. Building upon an existing base of regional main-street retail clients, John led the firm into a position of national recognition. It was in the early 1950’s that Albert B. Chipman established one of the first professional practices devoted to commercial planning and design. A generation later, Albert’s son John Chipman expanded the business from its initial staff of three to build the architecture firm Chipman Design, in 1979. By the mid 1990s, state-of-the-art computer technology became one of the firm’s hallmark services. In 2019, CDA celebrated their 40th anniversary and today it is still family owned with John Chipman’s daughter, Lauren Chipman, leading the team into the 21st century. This emerged from an exploration of needs drivers, and while it wasn’t useful in template rollout, it served as a great framing element when grouping like platforms and programs. Once the preliminary scale is locked down, you can make large tweaks by dragging orthogonally (left–right or up–down) along the axis of focus then dragging orthogonally along the opposite axis. Now that you have your text and object elements built, you’ll want to save them as a template for quick access when creating new boards.
